What’s the plan?

Sit back, enjoy the changing landscapes, and take in the atmosphere of rail travel as it used to be.

The Taranaki Mountaineer | New Plymouth to Waitotara & Return + Hawera to Waitotara & Return.

Sit back and relax aboard The Taranaki Mountaineer as we travel from New Plymouth to Hawera and Waitotara and return. This lovely journey is a great day out, starting as we depart New Plymouth along the rockwall coastline before heading into the Taranaki heartland - renowed for producing some of the best dairy in New Zealand! Travelling throught he rich fertile farmlands, Mt Taranaki guides our way south. Passing through country towns like Inglewood, Stratford and Eltham before shortly arriving into Hawera for a short stop at 10.35am.

We will wave goodbye (for now) to some of our passengers here, and pick up some Hawera locals. Departing Hawera, we soon pass by the impressive Whareroa Dairy Factory - on of the largest in the Southern Hemisphere, processing over 14 million litres of milk daily in the peak period! From Whareroa, we traverse over several short and sharp descents and ascents, crossing viaducts over the Tangahoe and Manawapou rivers, before ultimately meeting the coast again as we descend into Patea, from here we skirt the coast further south, crossing the Whenuakura river before arriving into Waitotara.

At Waitotara, our locomotives will shunt from one end of the train to the other in order to pull us back towards Hawera and New Plymouth. Enjoy the afternoon views, sip on a drink from our bar and savour the open-air views as you relax on your journey home with us.

For those travelling back to New Plymouth, there will be a short stop over at Hawera to load the passengers who departed the train earlier.

This is a rare opportunity to ride the rails in Taranaki - so why not make a full day of it?
