Board your privately chartered GVR touring train at Glenbrook or Pukekohe as we begin our unforgettable rail journey south through the heart of the North Island. Travelling across the lush Waikato wetlands and alongside the mighty Waikato River, we arrive at Hamilton for further passenger pickups before continuing into the rugged King Country. Pass through once-thriving railway towns such as Taumarunui before tackling the engineering marvel of the Raurimu Spiral and climbing onto the Central Plateau, reaching 814 metres above sea level.
Beneath the shadow of the imposing Mount Ruapehu we cross countless viaducts and rivers, including the Whangaehu River, site of the tragic Tangiwai Disaster, before descending through the dramatic landscapes of the Rangitikei region, famed for its limestone cliffs and soaring viaducts. Continuing south through the Kapiti Coast and into the lower North Island, we arrive in paekakariki, where we transfer to our accommodation in the vibrant Wellington for the evening.

Enjoy a day at leisure exploring vibrant Wellington. Wander the waterfront, browse museums and galleries, visit cafés and shops, or ride the iconic Wellington Cable Car for harbour views. With its compact and walkable city centre, Wellington offers plenty to discover at your own pace.

Join Heritage New Zealand for a guided tour of the historic Old Government Buildings and elegant Antrim House. Discover stories of New Zealand’s early government, heritage architecture, and Wellington’s Victorian-era past.
Afternoon Activity – Wētā Workshop Experience - $125
Go behind the scenes at Wētā Workshop and discover the creativity behind world-famous films including The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. Explore props, costumes, and special effects while learning how movie magic is brought to life.
Today we journey into the beautiful Wairarapa aboard a special heritage rail excursion to the renowned Carterton Daffodil Festival. Departing Wellington behind classic heritage locomotives, we race through the Hutt Valley before entering the historic 8.8km Remutaka Tunnel. the longest tunnel regularly used by passenger trains in New Zealand. Emerging into the Wairarapa, our journey continues through rolling countryside and rural townships before arriving in Carterton.
Spend several hours enjoying the famous spring festival atmosphere with vibrant street markets, live entertainment, food stalls, art displays, and the opportunity to visit the iconic Middlerun daffodil fields via complimentary shuttle buses. Wander among thousands of blooming daffodils, browse the many local stalls, or simply soak up the lively small-town festival atmosphere before rejoining our heritage train for the scenic return journey to Wellington.
This morning we board our heritage train in Paekakariki hauled by magnificent steam locomotive JA 1271 for a spectacular journey north along the North Island Main Trunk. Climbing through the Kapiti Coast and Manawatu regions, our steam locomotive echoes through tunnels, across viaducts, and alongside dramatic river gorges as we make our way toward the volcanic plateau.
Beyond Taihape the landscape becomes increasingly rugged as we climb toward the Central Plateau beneath the towering peaks of Mount Ruapehu, Mount Ngauruhoe, and Mount Tongariro. Passing through Waiouru and across the high-country tussock landscapes, we eventually arrive into the railway town of Ohakune, nestled at the foot of the mountains. After time to explore and soak up the atmosphere of this iconic railway and ski town, we transfer to our accommodation for the evening.

Beneath the volcanic peaks of Mount Ruapehu and Mount Tongariro, we traverse some of New Zealand’s greatest railway engineering feats, including the world-famous Raurimu Spiral where we descend through the tunnels, sweeping curves, and towering embankments.
Continuing through the rugged King Country and past historic railway towns such as Taumarunui and Te Kuiti, we travel north across rolling farmland and alongside the Waikato River. After passenger set-downs at Hamilton and Pukekohe, our steam-hauled rail adventure concludes back at the Glenbrook Vintage Railway, bringing to an end a memorable journey through the heart of the North Island.

Today we enjoy scenic touring through South Auckland and the Awhitu Peninsula, travelling through rolling farmland and rugged coastal landscapes as we make our way to the dramatic Awhitu Regional Park and the historic Manukau Heads Lighthouse overlooking the entrance to the Manukau Harbour. Here we take time to admire the spectacular coastal scenery and learn about the rich maritime history of this isolated corner of Auckland.
Later we continue to Glenbrook Vintage Railway where a specially chartered train awaits for a journey along the railway’s picturesque 7.5km branch line, complete with photo stops and runpasts. We also enjoy a guided visit through the railway workshops and restoration facilities before sitting down to an indulgent High Tea lunch within the railway precinct.
This evening we return to our overnight accommodation at DoubleTree by Hilton Karaka.
After breakfast we depart DoubleTree by Hilton Karaka and travel a short distance to Papakura where we board KiwiRail’s Northern Explorer for one of the world’s great rail journeys. Leaving Auckland behind, we travel south through the lush Waikato region, skirting the Waikato River and passing rolling farmland and rural townships.
Beyond Hamilton the scenery becomes increasingly dramatic as we enter the King Country, crossing deep gorges and travelling through historic railway settlements before climbing the world-famous Raurimu Spiral onto the Central Plateau beneath the volcanic peaks of Mount Ruapehu and Mount Tongariro. Continuing south through the Rangitīkei and Kapiti regions, we arrive into Wellington where we transfer to our accommodation for the evening.
