Rail Travel Day | Steam Locomotive Hauled
Mon 14 Sept 2026
Hawke's Bay → Ohakune

We depart by coach from Hawkes Bay to Palmerston North, departing Napier around 7.00am-7.30am Hastings, 8.00am-8.30am.

Boarding our heritage train in Palmerston North hauled by magnificent steam locomotive JA 1271 for a spectacular journey north along the North Island Main Trunk. Climbing through the Manawatu region, our steam locomotive echoes through tunnels, across viaducts, and alongside dramatic river gorges as we make our way toward the volcanic plateau.

Beyond Taihape the landscape becomes increasingly rugged as we climb toward the Central Plateau beneath the towering peaks of Mount Ruapehu, Mount Ngauruhoe, and Mount Tongariro. Passing through Waiouru and across the high-country tussock landscapes, we eventually arrive into the railway town of Ohakune, nestled at the foot of the mountains. After time to explore and soak up the atmosphere of this iconic railway and ski town, we transfer to our accommodation for the evening.
