Visiting GVR during COVID-19

Now that Auckland is under the Traffic Light System, the Glenbrook Vintage Railway is operating our Steam Train Experience and First Class Experience on selected dates.

We look forward to welcoming you back at Glenbrook Station for a relaxed journey by Steam Train through the countryside to Waiuku and return!

Due to COVID-19 we are taking extra precautions to keep our visitors and volunteers safe under the Traffic Light System:

  • Pre-booking of your train departure date and time is required under Traffic Light Red to manage visitor numbers.
  • Masks are required under Traffic Light Red and strongly encouraged under Traffic Light Orange to be worn for those aged 12 and up while inside. Wearing a mask is strongly encouraged elsewhere too for the safety of other visitors and our volunteers.
  • A special timetable will operate to provide separation between passengers for different train departures.
  • Some activities will not operate or operate in a different manner.
  • In accordance with government guideines we do not require My Vaccine Passes to be presented.

Unfortunately the rising cost of coal, other consumables, and general increases in costs we have experienced over the past 7+ years have reached the point where we can no longer absorb them. We have therefore had to make the tough decision to increase our fares to take account of these increased costs. Our volunteers and staff thank our visitors for their continued support of our railway through these uncertain times.

COVID-19 Precautions

My Vaccine Pass

GVR is operating in accordance with the COVID-19 Protection Framework.
GVR no longer requires My Vaccine Passes to be presented.

Contact Tracing

GVR will have on display NZ COVID Tracer QR codes on display at Glenbrook Station as well as in each carriage for you to scan.
If you want to manually sign in, please talk to our ticket office volunteers who can record your details.

Masks

For the safety of our visitors and volunteers, all persons aged 12 years and up are required under Traffic Light Red and strongly encouraged under Traffic Light Orange to wear a mask when inside any of our trains or buildings. We also strongly encourage people to continue wearing a mask at other points when on site. Masks are not required when eating and drinking, and some volunteers (such as those in the Steam Locomotive cab) are exempt from wearing masks for other safety reasons. If you do not have a mask or your mask become damaged, please ask one of our volunteers who have spare masks to give out. If you are medically exempt from wearing a mask, please do not be offended if our volunteers ask to confirm that you are exempt.

Physical Distancing

We ask that all visitors keep at least a 1m physical distance between themselves and people from other bubbles, or our volunteers where possible. There are plenty of seats available on our trains to allow you to distance, and we have a limit of 80 booked visitors per session during Traffic Light Red to ensure this.

Visitors

It is important that all visitors are pre-booked (during Traffic Light Red). Additionally:

  • If you are sick, including showing any cold or flu symptoms - please stay home.
  • Please keep track of where you have been - you can also scan QR codes in each carriage on the train.
  • Maintain good hygiene including washing your hands, and coughing or sneezing into your elbow.

Volunteers

We appreciate you being patient and treating our volunteers with respect as we get used to operating in the Traffic Light System. Please keep/leave at least a 1m physical distance from our volunteers where possible.

Onboard

Seating is not allocated onboard the train, and you are free to choose where your group is seated. Please try to maintain a 1m physical distance from other groups, and scan the QR code in that carriage. Our volunteers will clean high-touch areas on the train between sessions for your safety.

Cafe and Gift Shop
Our Refreshment Rooms (Cafe) and Publications (Giftshop) will be open. At Traffic Light Red, the number of visitors permitted inside at a time is two. This is to allow for physical distancing.
